"In-Q-Tel, the investment arm of the CIA and the wider intelligence community, is putting cash into Visible Technologies, a software firm that specializes in monitoring social media. It's part of a larger movement within the spy services to get better at using 'open source intelligence' — information that's publicly available... Visible Technologies crawls over half a million web 2.0 sites a day, scraping more than a million posts and conversations taking place on blogs, online forums, Flickr, YouTube, Twitter and Amazon. (It doesn't touch closed social networks, like Facebook, at the moment.) Customers get customized, real-time feeds of what's being said on these sites, based on a series of keywords. 'That's kind of the basic step — get in and monitor,' says company senior vice president Blake Cahill. Then Visible 'scores' each post, labeling it as positive or negative, mixed or neutral. It examines how influential a conversation or an author is. ('Trying to determine who really matters,' as Cahill puts it.) Finally, Visible gives users a chance to tag posts, forward them to colleagues and allow them to response through a web interface."

Let's put aside all the positive reasons to use social networking services and focus on the dark side. Most of the time, users don't even realize how much private information they're sharing over these services. There have already been stories about people Twittering or posting on Facebook that they're on holiday and getting robbed, but the problems don't end there.
At RSA Conference Europe 2009, Dr. Herbert Thompson talked about how attackers are launching innovative attacks against individuals and companies using the information shared over public social networking channels.

Dr. Thompson provided real-life examples where he was able to break into online accounts of several people (with their permission, of course). He didn't use complex tools or some esoteric hacking techniques, but rather focused on publicly available information.

The problem is even larger when you realize that you might not even be the one divulging the information. Maybe you're the kind of user that doesn't use Facebook, doesn't have a blog and avoids being photographed. At the same time, your e-mail password reset question may be: "What's my mother's maiden name?". This kind of data may be shared by other people you know and it could become a security problem.


The lesson to be learned here is that online hygiene doesn't necessarily depend only on the information you share, but it depends on everyone around you. If you don't have a Facebook page but a friend posts any personal information related to you, it can come back to haunt you.

We live in interesting times, in which we need to control not only what we do online, but also keep track of the information others are making available online.

Should we define a set of security policies for our friends? Surely, that would be a tough thing to implement.

If you see anybody publicly opposing President Obama’s plan to implement a government-centric overhaul of the health care system, the White House wants you to report that person (or persons) ASAP.

I just had a frightening realization about one possible outcome of the " snitch to the Whitehouse on your neighbor " thing , the desire by Eric Holder , Rham Emmanuel and certain members of Congress to deny anyone on the " Terror Watch List " their 2A rights , and the potential for what it could mean.

Bear with me for a minute and try to follow the reasoning and conclusion I reached . Tin Foil Helmet on ? Check , ok here we go .

We all know about the on going efforts to deny 2A rights to anyone thats on the " Terrorist Watch List " . We also know that list is incredibly error prone and people have virtually NO right or option to challenge their placement on the list .

Everyone knows about the Napolitano Domestic Terror Report from the Spring and what they said were signs of possible involvement in Domestic Terror , essentially vilifying veterans , gun owners , believers in God , believers of the ideals of the Founding Fathers , etc .

We all know that NObama , Holder , Rhambo , Holder , Sotomayor , Pelosi , Feinstein and the vast majority of the current Administration is foaming at the mouth Anti Gun .

We all know about the terrifying possibility of abuse of the new White House request to snitch on your neighbors , co workers , friends , or anyone else that says or forwards " fishy things " , " misinformation " and such about the Health Care Plan. We know the White House is compelled by Federal Law to archive all these communications , but they are also EXEMPT from Freedom Of Information Requests and The Privacy Act of 1974 .

What if they use the information submitted to the White House , to place peoples names on the Terror Watch List , eliminating their 2A Rights and essentially nuetering huge numbers of opposition from being able to mount a meaningful defense or guerilla action when they start rounding people up ?

Would any of us even know we're on the watch list until a PICS search was denied ?

I really dont want to think its possible , but every time I turn around it seems another little warning makes it self known .

"Good Cop/Bad Cop" - the Bush/Obama Team
If anyone thinks that Bush is for them on the right standing against Obama - you've fallen for the "good cop" view of Bush against the "bad cop" view of Obama.

If anyone thinks that Obama is for them on the left standing against Bush - you've fallen for the "good cop" view of Obama against the "bad cop" view of Bush.

Obama/Bush (Bush/Obama) are on the same team playing "good cop/bad cop" roles to seduce both the right and the left into coming under the same global socialist totalitarian regime.

Bush created the Patriot Act, brought US troops on American soil to "put down" civil unrest (control the civilian population in a police state - 20,000 troops are planned to come in for that purpose), paid Haliburton a fortune to staff concentration camps in the USA, the concentration camps have been built and prepared, and Obama has come to finish the job.

What the Bush/Obama (Obama/Bush) team doesn't want the right and the left to realize is that they are both on the same team - and are coming to take away all of your civil liberties and crush you under a global socialist totalitarian regime - as you fail to realize they are playing you for fools as "good cop/bad cop" just praying you don't realize the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ITSELF IS THE ENEMY OF THE RIGHT AND THE LEFT - the people of the USA.

They are controlled by transnational business and transnational banks. This is your new world order. It's real.

The problem with the Patriot Act is that it was on the table and passed so quickly that it was prepared before 9/11. The only reason the right DOUBTS that it could possibly have been a set up (the Patriot Act) to destroy our civil liberties is because they think Bush is the "good cop". Listen, he is not nor never has been a conservative. He has always been for the new world order. He was a member of Skull and Bone (with Gore and others) and look at his voting record. He mouthed that he was for the right and worked for the left to nationalize banks and permit this economic crisis.

Don't fall for the "good cop/bad cop" lines. Look at the facts. Dont' be as naive in buying the "Bush conservative" front as the left is naive in buying the "Obama liberal" front. These are two men with the same ultimate goals of totalitarianism in the USA. I am highly suspicious of Bush/Cheney. Just look out for the "good cop/bad cop" issue.

We must all (both right and left - unless you're so far left you are communist) be against totalitarianism and the federal government moving to take away our civil liberties and rights.

I'll come back with a bunch of links. But start to process what it would be like if Bush and Obama had the same transnational company and bankers backing them.

Bush is not PALIN. I trust that Palin is a true Christian and conservative. Bush pandered to the right, pandered to Christians, and said he didn't believe the Bible is literal or that Jesus is the only way of salvation in a recent interview. His grandfather was on the Federal Reserve. He could easily have been used to create the Patriot Act to prepare the destruction of the USA and to place the people under totalitarian rule for the next President they picked to be elected in 2008.

I think Palin was the only one blocking their plan. She would NOT be controlled by DC bankers or special interests that function behind the scenes.

Think "Good Cop/Bad Cop" and you can trust Palin, imo, - but you cannot trust Bush. You cannot trust Obama. We have to beware, now, of Obama and the threat of totalitarianism that Bush created and set up through the Patriot Act (knowing or unknowing)... and we need to realize that when these level calamities occur (a Great Depression)... OF COURSE there are people conspiring to enslave the American people and use the crisis to take us under the power of communism, global socialism, and totalitarianism.

Americans, we must stand in the spirit of our forefathers and reject this federal government's attempt to enslave us under communist totalitarianism.

It is NOT the rule of law!! This is NOT constitutional!!

We must return to the rule of the law and the power to the States and away from the federal government.

It's time for a real Patriot Act that brings out the patriot in all of us. We propose universal civilian service for every young American. Under this plan, All Americans between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five will be asked to serve their country by going through three months of basic training, civil defense preparation and community service. ...

Here's how it would work. Young people will know that between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five, the nation will enlist them for three months of civilian service. They'll be asked to report for three months of basic civil defense training in their state or community, where they will learn what to do in the event of biochemical, nuclear or conventional attack; how to assist others in an evacuation; how to respond when a levee breaks or we're hit by a natural disaster. These young people will be available to address their communities' most pressing needs.

Emanuel and co-author Bruce Reed insist "this is not a draft," but go on to write of young men and women, "the nation will enlist them for three months of civilian service." They also warn, "[s]ome Republicans will squeal about individual freedom," ruling out any likelihood that they would let people opt out of universal citizen service.

As chief of staff, Emanuel will not be in a position to directly introduce public policy, but his enthusiasm for compulsory service, combined with Barack Obama's own plan to require high school students to perform 50 hours of government-approved service, suggest an unfortunate direction for the new administration.
